"My 6 year old had been a reluctant reader but all he needed were these books that had easy enough words for him to sound out and words that repeat often enough that they become sight words. He's reading these with me every night now and we just ordered the "C" set."

First Little Readers Parent Pack Guided Reading Level B 25 Irresistible Books That Are Just the Right Level for Beginning Readers Liza Charlesworth Books Reviews

  • As a parent, I’m really happy with these. After kindergarten, my son was a low-average reader, despite us working on reading a couple hours a week all year. I tried these to see if a whole-language approach worked better for him, and it really does! We started at the A level, and he’s now halfway through a box of c-level readers! The stories are mildly interesting to me, which is pretty good considering the limitations of the level, and the books don’t get too difficult too quickly. Now that he’s in first grade, our goal is to do 15-30 minutes of him reading a day and then 15-30 minutes of me reading to him.

The books come with a helpful tip sheet, but I recommend parents
    - be sure you are pronouncing the synthetic phonics correctly (e.g., “h” is /h/ not /huh/),
    - picture walking really helped my son be more comfortable,
    - pointing out hard words in advance and helping him sound out the phonemes,
    - have him look at the beginning and end of the words and use context to guess (that might not feel like reading, but my main goal is to help him not feel frustrated while he works).
    - after he has read the set, he can reread them to earn five bonus minutes of screen time for each book he reads (this is very popular).

Anyway, if anyone else has a kid who loves stories and being read to, but hates reading, I recommend starting with this series and slowly working through them.
  • I was so excited to add this to my classroom library for the students. Almost 100% of my first graders are behind in their reading. It's very hard to find books that match their reading level that are interesting to them and something they can successfully read on their own while in reading stations. I have found something that keeps them engaged and excited to read everyday! These are perfect!
  • These are perfect for kindergarten readers. Easy words, short sentences, only a few pages, and bright pictures that help with the words.

The only complaint is these are really thin. The paper and the covers are not very sturdy so these aren't for kids that won't be careful.

Beware of the price. These are really only worth about fifty cents per book.
  • I have been looking for beginner books JUST like these for almost a year. I am ordering more after I post this review. My son is in kindergarten, learning sight words and these are perfect.
  • My 6 year old had finally gotten to the point where the "A" level first readers were too simple so I ordered these. They are only marginally more difficult in my opinion and she breezes through them. They do seem to have more words overall, but a lot of repetition like the easier ones and I find her getting bored with the books. I still gave them 4 stars because they're great for practice and don't take long to read. But if you already have the "A" level books and are looking for a more challenging set for your reader, you could probably skip these and go straight to C.
  • My 6 year old had been a reluctant reader but all he needed were these books that had easy enough words for him to sound out and words that repeat often enough that they become sight words. He's reading these with me every night now and we just ordered the "C" set.
  • I bought all three sets (A-B-C). My kids are very proud of themselves for being able to pick out a book from the set, go to one of the beanbag chairs in my reading area, and tackle the book all alone before asking me for help. Tickles me to no end.
  • I bought this set to see if it can help my 3yr old to have more interest in reading, and it turns out that the books are indeed irresistible to read, thanks to the the simple sentences and pictures. Some of his favorites are " Hats, Hats, Hats", "Shapes for lunch", and"My Meatballs" etc, there are plenty to choose from! We read one every day after dinner and before going to bed.
