Blueberry Pancakes The Novel Anton Lee Richards Books Reviews

  • It takes a really talented author to write a book that makes me smile and laugh. And whereas others have tried and failed, Richards succeeds beautifully. Tackling a subject, that of a gay man, struggling in a vigorously competitive profession (songwriter) is no simple feat. It was this combination that drew me to the story and motivated me to purchase the book. It surely did not disappoint. The characters are well cast right down to the protagonist’s familiarity with musicality, his authentic relationships, and the best friend Marlene, the ups-and-downs of love interests, etc. And I love how the blueberry pancakes was the treatment (emotional eating at its best despite the fact he didn’t like blueberries and the reason why he chose to eat them) to assuage raw emotions. The detail at times made me smile a lesbian couple one black, one white, with an Asian baby in a carriage. No discrimination in this story! I read and relished the scenes, dialogue, and unfolding page after page right down to the satisfying ending. And I am going to check out what else he has written.
  • I loved the premise of this book, and the author pulls it off beautifully. Throughout the book we follow Duncan’s journey as he struggles to find love. As a gay man in the music industry, things aren’t all blueberry pancakes, especially after his band hits their first real success.

It was very easy to connect to Duncan and his world though at times, his life was a rollercoaster ride. I love that the story doesn’t just focus on romance but also includes the importance of friendship and the drive of success. This is probably the “realist” fiction that I’ve ever picked up. Fantastic story.
  • I felt connected to the main character, feeling his story alongside him. A roller coaster ride er at times, a thrill ride, through relationships and breakups, both in friendships and love interests, As Duncan (the main character) strives to make sense of his journey, we come full circle into a bright new future for this young man, Duncan; a young man of colorful personality that keeps us rooting for him.
  • The author writes with passion for his characters. Entertaining dialogue and rich detail make this an enjoyable read. You will enjoy this work as well.
  • Inspired cover, title and structure. Edgy, original story stacked and packed with vivid portrayals. Friendship, changing relationships, talent, and the tricky ups and downs of creative collaboration are on the menu, presented by someone who's been there. Well done!
  • Fresh, funny, and flies by. I want more. And I'm totally girl crushing on the narrator. Laugh and cry. This is a must read. Now I need some pancakes.
  • I loved this book! It's fresh and very poignant. A must read for anyone who's trying to make it as an artist and working at a day job, especially if you also love Chicago
  • Worth the read.
