Take Charge of Bipolar Disorder A 4Step Plan for You and Your Loved Ones to Manage the Illness and Create Lasting Stability Julie A Fast John Preston 2015446697613 Books Reviews
- I’ve really enjoyed this book. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder 20 years ago, but I was never given enough resources to help really deal with it. I “researched†the illness on line and thought I knew a lot about it. This book proved me wrong by showing me how much I didn’t know. This is easy to read and I read it in 2 days (I do love to read, so if it’s a good book this is normal for me). I liked how it broke things down into easy to understand categories. Like the fact there’s more to the illness than just mania and depression. There’s anxiety, irritability, over stimulation, etc. For someone looking to not only understand the illness, but to find ways of coping that weren’t just meds, this book was an eye opener.
Yes, this book does cover information on medications. Having been on several that have been ineffective, I actually found this section eye opening as well. I always thought meds just didn’t work, but this book talks about the different types of medication and explains how each type works differently and why it can be difficult to find the right ones.
This book also covers other options and therapies for bipolar disorder (like acupuncture, which is part of my treatment regimen). I like how this book incorporates all different types of treatment. I fully agree with the entire body/mind/lifestyle needing to be treated and not just one part of it.
It wasn’t long before I started underlining passages in the book and making notes in the margins. There was a lot of useful information in every chapter, not just for me, but for my family and friends. Several of my notes were to my family and friends who are now reading the book. A way for me to point out to them “this is me. ..This is how I feel.†In fact, as my mother was reading it we were discussing work and she said “That’s a bipolar conversation!â€
I originally got this book as a eBook for me and then bought the paper copy for my family and friends to share (and to use for printing the work pages). The eBook was perfectly readable and I like having this book on hand at all times, but there are uses for the paper copy (such as sharing with your support team). And highlighting and making notes in an eBook are possible, but slightly more cumbersome for me personally.
I would highly recommend this book to people as a resource for finding a way to manage Bipolar Disorder in their lives. - This is by far the BEST book on bipolar disorder. Out of all the books I've read, this is the first one that makes any sense. It is practical practical practical. It's an absolute must for everyone dealing with bipolar - be it the individual or someone with a loved one with bipolar. It gives window boxes labeled "For family and friends" with do's and don'ts. It gives step by step instructions.
- Amazing book, very helpful for the person with the disease and their loved ones. Clear and concise writing. The 4-step plan is very logical, if of course the person with bipolar is willing/able to follow the suggestions. The book covers all the major issues of those confronting the disease. I cannot praise this book enough, it should be handed out in the hospital/doctor's office after the diagnosis has been made.
- I feel that this book will really help me manage my bipolar disorder better. I am newly diagnosed and this book has given me hope for a brighter future. I have been feeling very discouraged, because my medications were not helping me and were causing me to cycle. I like that this is a four pronged approach and that diet recommendations were included. I highly recommend this book.
- Best book on Bipolar I've ever seen. Great for helping the non-Bipolar person to understand the actual nature of the Bipolar disorder. This is a great book for family members or spouses to facilitate discussion. It also contains a great variety of techniques to help both the person with the Bipolar challenge and their friends and family to work through solutions.
Bipolar can be extremely difficult to manage, even with the use of medications and therapy. This is one of the best resources of its type I've ever seen. While there is no easy solution to managing Bipolar behaviors, this is a resource I highly recommend. - Recommended by my therapist and a very worthwhile purchase. What I am learning and now putting to use about bipolar disease, is invaluable! My "quirks, weaknesses, annoyances" as seen by me and others are now better understood as part of the malady. Plus, strategies to lessen those traits are spelled out and actually WORK!!!
In the past, I accepted my "mental illness" intellectually. . .emotionally not as much. But seeing it now, for what it is - a "disease", is so much easier to wrap my brain and feelings around. The workbook format is great, in that actually needing to write down specifics, forces pause, contemplation and decision making which I feel is very important! In addition, the grey boxes that spell out suggestions for family, friends, and caretakers associated with a bipolar acquaintance, are "go to"
sections.
I continue to read, study, learn and answer sections as I make my way through this workbook! Buy it! - As someone recently diagnosed, I could not put it down. It taught me so much about understanding my own condition. My family also liked the family tips and overall book. What a great book. I even sent the checklista to my doctor to help with assessing my meds. Thanks so much.
- This book made me understand myself so much. All I understood about Bipolar II was you have highs that aren't crazy highs and lows. This book explains why you feel so awful about yourself. It explains the paranoia, fears, relationship problems, and the horrible self-esteem. I thought it was all just me. It was such a relief to understand that it's all part of the illness. I was so relieved that "I'm not guilty of a crime I didn't commit." It's very readable and there is advice for friends and family in the book too. I can't say enough about how good this book is and how highly I recommend it for someone dealing with Bipolar or someone dealing with a friend or loved one. There's plenty of insight and clear advice which is so important.
