The Confidence Myth Why Women Undervalue Their Skills and How to Get Over It Helene Lerner 9781626562028 Books Reviews

  • Gives you the tools you need to move forward with more confidence and pursue the things that fear may have held you back from in the past.
  • Well written and appreciated.
  • I wanted to like this book and find it helpful, but it didn't give me any tools that I don't already know or have. That said, this might be helpful for a female lacking confidence at work or who's new in the workplace.

I've been looking for books to help me advance at work, and I'm checking them out from the library. If I find them helpful, I buy them as a reference. This is one of those books I checked out, but I will not be buying.

I'm going to keep looking for a better book on the concept of confidence.
  • I read the "Confidence Myth" on a 90 minute flight when traveling on business. It is a very quick read with lots of practical information and great insights that I will definitely use in everyday practice at work. This book is a "must" read for women aspiring to advance in their organizations. You will love the short chapters and personal stories from many successful business women.who share their authentic and transparent wisdom with the readers. Helene Lerner is definitely leading the charge for dispelling the myths on confidence especially with women.
  • As a former psychotherapist and now as an executive coach for managers and leaders and a life coach for individuals and couples I don't often come across a book I highly recommend. This book is an exception for many reasons. It's written in an engaging style and Helene Lerner knows what she's talking about when it comes to building confidence. For instance, the first thing she addresses is the myth that confident people don't struggle with fear and a lack of confidence from time to time.

Sharing stories from her own life and the lives of others, Helene makes it clear that her success and the success of others didn't come from having total confidence every step of the way--it came from making decisions and taking action with whatever level of confidence they had at the time. Throughout the book, Helene addresses many confidence myths, shares "Power Tools" to increase confidence and gives us "Confidence Sparks" with further insights and actions to nurture our confidence.

"The Confidence Myth" isn't a academic treatise on the subject--it's like sitting down with the author having a personal discussion of what confidence really is and and how to get more of it from someone who has done it and continues to do so. There is no fluff in this book, it is to the point, easy to read and an exceptional guide to living life and building a career with more confidence.

For your career, there is solid advice on giving and taking feedback, finding a sponsor to boost your career success and trusting your "inner compass" to navigate through the challenging times. If you read one book on confidence, make it this one. It's that good.
  • This book is filled with very important and practical advice for women at all stages of their careers. Helene does a great job of taking critical work place behaviors and illustrating them with examples from her own career and those of other successful professional women. Understanding that confidence is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to take action despite fear, is something that will hopefully take pressure off of the many women striving for perfection. In sharing Helene's book and messages with hundreds of women in my company, I heard overwhelmingly positive feedback from women who were very encouraged by her helpful tips, research, and recommendations. I think this book is important to read and internalize. It powerfully distills messages around taking risks, building relationships, promoting yourself, and saying no to the "time bandits" that sap you of energy and leave you no time for yourself.
  • There were some interestin gpoints made in this book and some solid advice. It definitely had valid points for anyone in the workplace hoping to succeed to ponder. However, like Lean In, which it often references, it's easy to claim your position with confidence when you are already in a leadership role.
  • I found myself nodding in agreement with so many of the profound truths captured in this book! It resonated with me in such a powerful way and caused me, at one point in my reading, to pause and to list and redefine the qualities of my personal brand. Exceptional read for those committed to moving successfully forward.
