A Land Remembered has become Florida's favorite novel. Now this Student Edition in two volumes makes this rich, rugged story of the American pioneer spirit more accessible to young readers. Patrick Smith tells of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family battling the hardships of the frontier. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias and Emma MacIvey arrive in the Florida wilderness with their son, Zech, to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that his wealth has not been worth the cost to the land. Between is a sweeping story rich in Florida history with a cast of memorable characters who battle wild animals, rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom out of the Florida swamp.

In Volume 2, with the birth of Zech and Glenda's son, Solomon, a new generation of MacIveys learns to ride horses, drive cattle, and teach rustlers a thing or two. Sol and his family earn more and more gold doubloons from cattle sales, as well as dollars from their orange groves. They invest it in buying land, once free to all, now owned and fenced and increasingly populated, until it becomes just a land remembered.

"I enjoyed reading both volumes. There were so many twists in the books. Plus, there were times when I felt like I was really in the moment of that time experiencing life back then. I made me appreciate my life compared to back in the past. I love nature, but not enough to enjoy camping. Living in Florida all of my life, I could imagine the hardships of life in the early days."

A Land Remembered Patrick D Smith Books Reviews

  • My son read A Land Remembered Volume 1 in school and couldn't put it down, so I bought the sequel. He loved this one as well. It is set in 1800's to 1900's old Florida, discussing a family who made their fortune in cattle ranching then switched to orange growing after the father grew too old and weak to continue herding cattle. The writer uses language that is engaging to tweens and because there are mainly male characters my 11 year old boy remained engaged in the story. If you have read the first book, check out volume 2 to continue the story of this family. Adults will also like to read about old Florida!
  • Could not put the book down after the first page. What a great read about the three generations of a family from the mid 1800's to the mid 1900's
Who would have ever thought there was that much Cowboying in Florida during that period. Would reccomend this book for any young person as every page is so full of adventure and you can't help but wonder what is on the next page.
  • This is an extremely wonderful story of early Florida and the pioneers that blazed the path to what we have today. It is very entertaining and you live right with the characters for their entire lives and those of their children. It displays success earned by hard work and hard times. I bought this on my form and I highly recommend it for you.
  • I enjoyed reading both volumes. There were so many twists in the books. Plus, there were times when I felt like I was really in the moment of that time experiencing life back then. I made me appreciate my life compared to back in the past. I love nature, but not enough to enjoy camping. Living in Florida all of my life, I could imagine the hardships of life in the early days.
  • I was recommended this book by my nephew, I was hesitant but downloaded it and I could not put it down. If you love Florida this is a great trip into old Florida as you follow a family through three generations. I truly enjoyed it. It was a very easy enjoyable read.
  • I read both Volume I and I. Loved them both and could read them again. Very educational on the history of Florida. If I were still teaching every year the classes would be reading these books and doing a book report on both Books. I have never read a book about a state from the beginning of time. It is told as it really was!!
  • A mere 175 years ago Florida was the eastern most wild West. Follow the Macivey clan through 3 generrations of heartbreak and triumph and heartbreak again. A solid story well told and unforgettable.
  • A delightful story of the early cattle and fruit industries in Florida following the MacIvey Family for three generations. Should be required reading for citizens of Florida. I plan to purchase both volumes for my middle school grandson.
